Here’s how you can enable or disable the Always On Display on your iPhone

Can you enable Always On Display on iPhone 13 or lower?

No, Always On Display is only available on the current iPhone 14 series. Even if you have updated to iOS 16 on your iPhone 13, you still cannot use this feature. This is because Always On Display works differently on iOS than it does on Android. While on Android you can only see the clock and important notifications when the Always On Display is enabled, on iOS you can even view your lock screen wallpaper in the background. Your iPhone dims the background image and drops the refresh rate to 1Hz in order to consume less battery. When you activate your home screen, the refresh rate jumps back to its normal level. Apple’s ProMotion display allows it to adapt its refresh rate every time you activate the home screen. This feature isn’t available on iPhones older than iPhone 13. While iPhone 13 can drop its refresh rate down to 10Hz, it still cannot achieve the 1Hz refresh rate required for Always On Display. The difference in battery efficiency when the refresh rate drops down to 1Hz compared to 10Hz is considerable. This is why Apple may never offer Always On Display for iPhone 13.

Does AOD keep your display active at all times?

No, there are certain situations when the display completely shuts off even when Always On Display is enabled on your iPhone. Here’s when the display will go completely dark to save battery life.

When your iPhone is lying face down  When your iPhone is in your pocket or bag When Sleep Focus is on When Low Power Mode is on When your iPhone is connected to Apple CarPlay When you’re using Continuity Camera When you haven’t used your iPhone in a while When you’re wearing an Apple Watch and you move away from your iPhone
